Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.

Our Lady's Abbey has participated in this programme since 2005 and has successfully achieved the following flags:

  1. Litter and Waste
  2. Energy
  3. Water
  4. Travel
  5. Biodiversity
  6. Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste

We are currently working on the Global Citizenship Energy flag.

Children from various classes have been involved in:

  • Green School Committee
  • Renewal of the flags achieved to date
  • Planning for the various flags
  • Planting bulbs and vegetables in our school garden
  • Harvesting vegetables and fruit
  • Feeding the birds and fish in our school pond
  • Making bird feeders
  • Observing and identifying garden birds
  • Bug Hotel
  • Other agencies e.g. Heritage in Schools
  • Litter-picking and Team Limerick Clean-Up
  • Anti-littering posters
  • Making Junk Art
  • WOW/SOW – Walk on Wednesday/Scoot on Wednesday
  • Completing Nationality surveys with their classes
  • Completing projects based on different countries
  • Tasting food from different countries
  • Organising art competitions

The School Garden

We are committed to keeping our school clean and tidy. Every year we have worked hard to improve our school yard. We started a School Garden more than ten years ago. It started small but has now grown into an amazing sight and the envy of many.
